In the ARG it seems Dumont Shipping has been around a LONG time, part of Encom for a fair while too. I tend to wonder if the I/O program was named Dumont by Gibbs in honor of the division, considering their logistical natures. In the original film there's no mention of any subsidiaries, so in that canon one could say they named or renamed the shipping company in honor of the program Kevin encountered while on the original Grid.

You mean Walter Gibbs, who is the apparent coder of Dumont.
Dumont is also a reference to the early TV maker, who was pretty much the sole one initially and for a time a television was called a 'Dumont', much as a wireless radio was called a 'Marconi'.
Would you like a Kleenex?

Thanks, I hang my head in shame for missing that in my edits.
Yes, Gibbs, not Dumont. Although then, it should be Gibbs Shipping, shouldn't it? Where did the Dumont name come from? I suppose he must have used that as his program/login name, similar to Lora/Yori, right?

Just to clarify...Walter Dumont started Encom (Dillinger: "Encom isn't the business you started in your garage anymore"). He's not just some guy who happened to own a shipping company and worked in the laser lab. But it was apparent that Dillinger was forcing him out at the time (Dumont: "Sometimes I wish I was back in that garage." Dillinger: "That can be arranged, Walter.") So it's no wonder he'd have a soft spot for Flynn & his son.

| You don't think those events were planned long before hand? I'm sure most of the ARG was designed in outline before the first Bit hit the post office. The details of each stage are malleable I'm sure, but they can't exactly just make up the story and events a month in advance - especially when they're using the REAL actors from the film. |
I don't know how long the events were planned before hand, do you? All I can do is base my analysis on the facts at hand, and the chronology of events. The 89 logo appears in the trailer before the ARG. That trailer utilized scenes shot months before that. |
If you want to get really technical, the ARG started with the Flynn's Arcade event back in July '09. If 42E was already working up the outline then, they could easily get involved with the Disney folks enough to talk about a logo that Sam would use that would appear in both the film and the ARG. I'm not aware that the shooting schedule was ever published either, or that anyone knows when those shots were put together. In a recent interview it was noted that as little as 2 weeks ago, they were STILL putting the last bits of work on the film. Usually a film is 'in the can' a month before its released.
Also, the first trailer with footage from the film, NOT the FX test, was first shown 2 weeks after the first ARG event of 2010. I'm sure that event with coordination in cities worldwide, including the logistics of setting up cell phones that would work worldwide, took at least a month to plan, probably more.
Another thing that makes me think the 89 Forever logo and idea was an insertion specifically as a result of the ARG work is that I have not seen any other usage of the logo in any other merchandising or licensed materials. |
Hard to know. It's pure conjecture on both our parts. As far as the 89 being used for licensing, it's on the Oakley hardcase backpack.

Syd Mead references
As Sam is leaving Flynn's arcade I noticed it was on "Mead" street. Didn't catch the intersecting street. The original Syd Mead Tron font seems to be unchanged and prominently displayed during the Disc War scene as well.

| Was there anything at the end of the credits? |
I waited, there was nothing, except the privilege of being last in line to pick up your phone. Smart move bolting out of there. |
If you were in Hall H at the Legacy panel for SDCC 2010 for the recording of the arena scene audio, it was DEFINITELY worth waiting around! Shout-out under special thanks

You could see the poster in one of the early trailers too. Think it was the SDCC 10 one but not sure. I may have made a high pitched squealing noise. (Not that I had an original Black Hole poster hanging next to my Tron one or anything.)
There is also a figure of one of the bots from Black Hole, V.I.N.C.E.N.T. I think (can't remember).
Aside from being a shout-out to the next project, Black Hole and Tron are linked in the history of FX. Black Hole's opening sequence was the longest sequence of cinematic CGI (as of '79), they had to develop a lot of computer-controlled matchmoving equipment for it (especially due to extensive matte work), AND it had the first-ever digitally recorded soundtrack. Basically it was very much a large part of making Tron possible.

Not a sequel but a remake. It's the directors next project.

Nothing unique, except the material in this film. Similar to a neutral Bit, but I believe the Bit was less pointy in its neutral state; not sure if it was the same number of faces this puzzle either (too lazy to check right now) |
That's it. Thanks, Bruce. I knew I had seen them. Not sure if you can make them out of 2 of the Rubik's things, but yeah, I knew I had seen them before.
