I bet he's headed for Amity Island for the rare fish hunt. It's not like he's going down the pond chasin' bluegills and tommycods. This coelacanth will swallow you whole. Little shakin', little tenderizin', an' down you go.
He's gonna need a bigger boat.

So... if the charts are listing the time of slack water between tide changes, say 34 min, the event (high or low tide) would occur exactly in the middle of the duration, say 9:23 am plus 17 min for high or low tide at 9:40 am? Posted: Thu Jul 08, 2010 5:30 am |

Back on topic though, tonight I'm going to begin the Brute Force process and try to nail down a location based on low tide times. I'm almost sure it will be fruitless just like all the other puzzles we've had so far. I'll be able to get close enough to a solve to frustrate the hell out of myself and then spend the next few days obsessing over it. I. Can't. WAIT. ETA: I found another site that's making the brute force a bit easier on the eyes. http://www.tides.info/ So I started my searching in Nova Scocia down into Maine. I noticed that the closest matches were still about an hour off. So I moved southward and westward into the mid-atlantic states. It seems like the closest matches are in Massachusetts. Specifically in Cape Cod down to Nantucket Island. It makes sense to me that JM would try to charter a boat out of Boston to get to Cape Cod for some rare fish spotting. It also makes sense to me that he would go to Cape Cod. It's known world-wide as a sport fishing mecca. It's also home to snakehead fish, red lionfish, giant sturgeon, sea lamreys, and wolffish to name a few. I found some more supporting evidence that these are a form of tidal charts.
During the lunar cycle, there are two types of tides that cause stronger and weaker tidal forces. The result is higher and lower than average water levels during tides, slack water time that is shorter than average and stronger tidal currents than average. The tides are called spring tides and neap tides. Spring tides usually occur around Full and New moons due to the sun being lined up with the moon and earth. Neap tides occur around First Quarter and Last Quarter moons since the sun and moon's gravitational forces somewhat cancel each other out. The interval between each spring tide is about 2 weeks. The tidal charts on HLM follow a pattern which is fairly consistent with what you would expect a spring tide (full moon and new moon). Note that the times overlap one another on these dates. Also note the 2 week interval between the time anomalies.
So I'm fairly well convinced the HLM calendars are a form of tidal chart. It's not your average tidal chart for sure. Probably one that pertains only to low tides. Maybe low tides are the best time to spot rare fish. Posted: Wed Jul 07, 2010 3:36 pm |

Thanks for starting the thread.
So here is an example of tide charts for Boston Harbor for the week of June 16th through June 22nd.
So if we compare that to the HLM calendar for that week we see that none of the tide times really match. Therefore, Boston can likely be eliminated as the location to which the HLM tide chart refers (if in fact it is a tide chart).
So this is what I'm basing analysis upon. Using http://www.saltwatertides.com/pickpred.html and http://super8.wikibruce.com/Hooklineandminker.com/Calendar As I said, though I think I kind of goofed the moon phases and I have to go back and change them on the wiki. Also, July times haven't been updated as of this moment. I'll get the wiki updated today, though. ETA: Just finished updating the wiki calendars. All info should be accurate now.
