I'm out of country for the next week and probably shouldn't have gone after that one; but, it felt a bit like a gauntlet had been dropped.

Oh, that is a beautiful flick. A must see.... but not many Caine movies don't qualify for that rating. Except maybe Cars II. And Get Carter (2000)

Composition looks very Hitchcock. As it does look British and all of his British "train" movies were black and white, I'm gonna say "Frenzy", though I don't remember any trains in it.

Not Almost Famous. But a lot of the people in that movie who really were famous later found a home in the city that is the main setting of this movie.
Probably giving it away by telling you it's a normal nerds epic.
