In other news, a post on the Myst forum caught my eye this week. MagiQuest Online, the game which Cyan made for Creative Kingdoms's MagiQuest franchise, is ending. The gameplay felt very much to me like a kiddie version of Uru, using repurposed avatars and navigation in a new environment. I bought the first chapter in support of Cyan's ongoing business, and I will miss having another place to explore.
from the official announcement:

...we have decided to discontinue MagiQuest Online on December 31, 2012. This decision was not made lightly, but was determined to be the best plan of action after much investigation.
For those Magi who have not yet had a chance to experience the magic of MagiQuest Online, the game will remain available on the MagiQuest website and at select MagiQuest locations until October 29, 2012.
For existing Magi, we invite you to return and enjoy MagiQuest Online until the game shuts down on December 31, 2012. |

So glad they fixed the Minkata sparklie! I have the game downloaded to my new PC at home, so I should make some time to get all of my calendar stones sometime soon.

Bumping with the latest updates.
The official MOULa server has been updated to software build #905, which includes several bug fixes and other enhancements. For a complete list, refer to this announcement
As they say elsewhere:
| Quote: |
| It has been a while since there has been a version update... so if you are having any problems with the patcher hanging, be sure to run the launcher as administrator as well as re-allowing UruLauncher.exe to access the internet through your firewall. |
Cyan thanks the OpenUru Minkata Test Shard for assisting in the development and launch of these fixes. OpenUru invites you to join them this weekend as they stress-test their own servers. Join me!
(above was Feb.14, adding Feb.26, not worth a new-post bump)
Another team has set up another shard, based on their own modifications to the open source platform. They call it the Gehn shard. More info at the Guild of Writers subforum

another update, another bump, another announcement of progress.
OpenUru.org now has a shard running on MOSS, and has opened it to the public for beta testing. They're calling it the Minkata Shard, as it is a giant sandbox, but it contains all of the Uru ages.
Refer to the thread below for history, status, and other details.

It's a project I've long wanted to do related to Uru. Of course I will. The project is far from finished, but watch the site for more info
Let's just say that it involves the whole community. At least I hope it will
It won't be about reading. It won't be about playing the games. It will be about collaboration! |
heh, by the time some of you find this, the countdown may have reached zero...
(returned later)
Well, that was anticlimactic. The countdown is gone, and there is a sign-up form if you want to be notified when the site really launches. As the title bar now says, it is for:

I haven't been "in cavern" in months. *sigh*
But here's a cheery sequence of web comics to warm my heart:

I did the cancel-then kill task-then restart the patcher thing, and it didn't work.
Only re-installing the .exe did. Weird, yeah?

I think there was a bug with the patcher such that it would "just sit there" after successfully updating, but the solution was simple: After the update completes, cancel/exit the program AND kill the process from your Task Manager; then restart Uru.
The calendar sparklie in Minkata is still missing, as far as I know. It is a known bug with no work-around.
I myself have finally started down the path for installing fan-created Ages. I have some of the pieces working but not all of them, and I've had some minor glitches in the procedure. My expectations were not high, so I was pleasantly surprised by a few things I've seen so far, but nothing major or awe-inspiring to report yet.

I got a hankering for the Cavern, and so I tried to connect to Uru the other day.
Well, it had been a while, and my patcher was very, very out-of-date. So much so that the patcher just hung there, not updating itself.
I ended up having to re-install the .exe from their links page (not a strenuous process, I will say), and then I was up and running again.
So, if you have trouble with the patcher just sitting there, it may be versioned so old it just can't hook to the newer ones. Do a re-install, and it will re-synch all the stuff you've previously downloaded, and update it.
My tree in my Relto is getting quite tall! I also still need to find all the calendar sparklies.
Work is so busy, but I hope to keep visiting again soon.

Re: Myst Uru Online
yeah, we've been checking it out since mid-February
Scroll up to read about some of our reactions to being able to play in multi-player online mode again.
I didn't see anything new or different at the link. For the latest developments, I recommend keeping an eye on the official forums at http://mystonline.com/forums/index.php

I've been visiting the Cavern less and less each week. Last weekend I did finally start baking my first batch of pellets, then got bored. I also have only 2 or 3 of the 4 pod ages done -- but i cannot remember which ones! Then I was using the pod portal calculator but realized too late that my computer was an hour off. *sigh*
I decided to do the free trial intro of MagiQuest Online instead. I had almost enough fun to justify buying the next chapter for the next time i'm bored.

I have not been to the Cavern in a couple weeks, but things have gotten a little less busy in my life in the past few days, so I hope to return there soon!
I have marker missions to run! And I haven't even cooked a single pellet yet!
Also, I am wondering how big my Relto tree is now.
