Bit of an opinion question...
Hi! I didn't want to post under my account so it wouldn't be associated with the game. I haven't been an active ARG
participant long, but I've been lurking ARGs and reading the archives for literally years, because I find the interaction between the players and their train of thought as they explore the game as interesting as the game itself. Lately, I've also read huge swaths of this board, because I have a great idea for a story/world, and a really neat idea for a component, and even have a team, but I have a quick question for you guys:
Having read the forum, I know the general opinion on IG Government or corporate websites being hosted on Freewebs: it breaks the illusion, and while a good game can be made on free hosting, it's an absolute last resort.
Now, the problem isn't that I'm unwilling to put money into the fledgling game. It's that the component is already a huge budget suck: I'm planning videos heavily involving claymation and puppets, including the two main characters who will be probably in every single one (it's a black comedy sort of thing). So I'm looking to lower the price anywhere I can.
And so, basically, my question is this: is a
http://www.dot.tk free domain forward from www.arg.freewebs.com to www.arg.tk an acceptable compromise?
In favour: Superficially at least, it's a domain, and it gives email forwarding too.
Against: It's easy to go around, so provides little "bulk" to the illusion (but it's still some). The answers to emails will still be from gmail adresses. The .tk url is the only thing that will display as you navigate other pages.
So, should I do a .tk, or spring for a proper domain?
