So to be honest, I have been on an ARG hiatus for the last few months because of the beginning of a new semester at my school. Trust me, I sorely miss the company of a good mystery in my life. Well, it turns out that in my speech class we are allowed to do an informative on a topic of our choosing; of course this is the first thing to come to mind.

However I didn't realize how fast ARG's have grown in the time frame that they have been around. I am thinking of using Marble hornets and maybe the Jejune institute as examples of what ARG's, chaotic fiction or pervasive games can be. Though I am a little stuck.

1. How do you feel that ARG's have effected your life?

When I first started (with Chasing the Wish way back when) It was days and weeks of waiting for the next email-character chat - updates that left me with very little sleep.

Followed by actually being part of running several games. Which led to more nights with lack of even less sleep.

I now have frinds from Denmark to New Zealand and beyond! People I have actually met at ARGFest-o-cons!

2. What do you think their impact is on the idea of gaming?

I think it has brought being social back into games. Decades ago you had to play games with people! Then there were computer games that you played alone! Then there was DnD that you played with people - but they were usually geeks like me!

Now you play and talk and interact with people! In a good way! Not trying to kill them in a videogame!

3. Do you think it will be able to progress in the coming years? If so what do you think the progressions are?

Well back in 2002 when I started playing most games were made by players for other players. For a while it seemed thatcompanies wouldn't really be able to make a go because ... well frankly we thought most of them had no imagination. Then they companies started noticing the people making args and hiring them to make args for the company! Wow - then ARGs had a real budget to work with and not a shoestring in sight!
I have no idea where ARGs will go next, but I am looking forward to it.

4. what is something you think must absolutely be covered when explaining an ARG?

Interactivity and that the most fun can be extracted by working with other players to find difficult solutions.

Now I have to fight against some preconceived notions of what ' alternate reality' means. a lot of people have come up to me and asked if it had something to do with those virtual reality helmets/ games that are touted to be the next greatest thing in gaming.

It is still a little hard for me to explain that alternate reality games happen to be rooted in real time and in real places on the map. -____-
