The blood moon means total eclipse so that means the earth is between the the sun and moon, casting the reddish shadow on the moon.

The exact tint--anything from bright orange to blood red is possible--depends on the unpredictable state of the atmosphere at the time of the eclipse.
It is essentially a shadow. With the mention of the red-looking sea with it, it could mean a reflection of that eclipe or red moon (mirror effect?).
