Well.

I used the instructions to be able to download the app.
Got it in iTunes, great.
Tried to sync to load the app to the phone, and I dunno what happened but probably some snowball effect of sync-locking and profile rights between itunes and the iphone, but my iphone is now in a perpetual shutdown state. Syncing stopped working in itunes saying it couldn't sync or a sync was already running (but the phone was fine). Restarted itunes, no change. Wanted to restart iphone, but on shutting down, it's simply now stuck with the 'please wait' gear animation. No buttons work. Can't shut it off. It's been going for hours. It was fully loaded on battery being plugged in; and when plugged in, its recognition as a usb connected device was in and out.
This has better not have bricked my phone. Evil or Very Mad

If you are having trouble with the iTunes store, then check out the following article from the official Apple support pages:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2534

Also, if iTunes is not working as expected, double check that you have the very latest version of iTunes installed.

When I tried to do this, there was no option for no payment type. I had to put in a credit card, which means the account creation will probably fail when it goes to validate the card if I put in a fake US address.

Did anybody else not get the option for a 'free' itunes account?

It's (for some reason) only available to US store people. Here's what you do:

in iTunes, log out of your account.
Switch to the US app store (on the main page of the store, at the bottom i think)
Search for the TRON app, go back to the page for the app.
click 'download' or 'free' or whatever.
It'll ask you to login to to the US store.
Create a new account. for payment type, select 'none'.
