Nighthawk, just watch JJ Abrams' TED Talk and you'll understand the kind of thinking borne of fascination that leads to triggering fascination in others. The viral campaign for Cloverfield is probably one of, if not the best example of him doing just that.
Cloverfield didn't gross more than big name character based summer blockbusters, but it did set the record for a January release (usually where movies are sent to die), made a profit several times over, and set some records for traffic on these very forums.
Rogi, love you too. Bet you're a joy at parties.
(If you don't have something nice to say, why hop on the thread and say anything at all?)
My hope is JJ makes this as intriguing as the viral was for Cloverfield, no matter if it's related to that or not. I'm playing the more 'accepted' and conventional ARG for Tron, and it's fun - but it's not the same kind of fun.
I know they say it is confirmed but I would like to see it confirmed by other sites or by my own eyes before I believe it. LOL.
Just pasting some of the info from that article if that is okay.

Update: Our sources tell us J.J. Abrams is actually directing this time around, although nothing is confirmed. Earlier today news broke about a top secret trailer for a new J.J. Abrams project entitled Super 8, which would premiere in front of Iron Man 2 this coming weekend. No other details were available at the time. An update at Vulture CONFIRMS that Super 8 is in fact a quasi-prequel to the smash-hit viral monster movie Cloverfield!! "Our sources...say that Super 8 is absolutely connected to 2008's Cloverfield (possibly a prequel, but not a sequel)." They continue with the plot details, which sound awesome. "Insiders familiar with the trailer tell us that it shows a bunch of kids who are shooting a movie with a Super 8 camera in the seventies or eighties. When they develop the film, they notice that there's an alien creature in the frame." OMFG. To put the icing on the cake, this sounds exactly like the Abrams/Steven Spielberg collaboration announced back on April 28th. Did I say OMFG?! Have your say below.

For what it's worth, I love Cloverfield because I have /always/ loved giant monster movies. I've had a vinyl Godzilla sitting on my entertainment center for the past 15 or 20 years, still cuddle my Godzilla VHS tapes, thinks THE HOST (Gwoemul) was incredibly good, and etc. I have the $100 limited edition/expensive Cloverfield action figure. Comparatively speaking, TDK was good, certainly, Iron Man 2 holds no interest for me, and neither does Tron. I don't think the Cloverfield ARG/CF was better than any of the other major CFs/ARGs that are happening, but the subject matter has always been the draw, not the play.

That question was asked last time
The answer this time is that there's none at the moment. But with as little as a rumour to go on, it demonstrates there's certainly an enthusiastic fan base. I hope if this is a Cloverfield 2, that this is noticed and appreciated.
Rogi, some people here enjoy discussing it (and dissecting even a hint of a suspicion to the nth degree ), but it's nice seeing that sort of enthusiasm for something and that's enough for me.

Cloverfield has a small, but apparently, rabid, fanbase. It earned 1/10 what TDK did, placing 36th in worldwide receipts for 2008. I can't find it anymore, but I remember a poll finding that a large percentage of people who saw it said they weren't sure what convinced them to go see it and that they probably wouldn't watch a sequel.
I've patiently waited for it to just go away from around here. But now I'm just hoping we don't have another round of inanity flooding the forums. If we could setup a personal ignore filter for the forums , Cloverfield related content is the one thing I'd add. I thought the movie was okay when it came out, but I find myself almost hating it now.
Just my tuppence.

I think that part of it's popularity is the way that it was revealed. Just BOOM! out of nowhere. and the title was not even revealed.
As for this new movie, if bloody disgusting is to be believed, this could be a more traditional movie, with some handicam moments put in.
Lastlky, to whomever said that they don;t make super8 film anymore. I believe that it is still made. But normal 8mm is still made.

While we wait, I might as well ask... What *is* it about Cloverfield exactly?
Why is that product and the rather limited campaign it ran (let's face it: the Cloverfield campaign, at least from a design and implementation standpoint, pales in comparison to TDK, Tron and several others) so captivating and makes everyone lose bowel control over it?
If you look at the design of it, there wasn't much to it, and more story was left up to the imagination than was revealed. What makes it such an 800lb gorilla in this industry?

As if I needed another reason to see Iron Man 2. Gonna look this one over closely.

Whoaa you guys are quick!
What kosmopol posted is what the director ruminated on when talking about a sequel. 'What if there were lots of people recording the same event, each with their own story to tell' sort of thing. But retelling the exact same NY instance would be boring, so I hope it's AFTER cloverfield, so we can enter a more epic/worldwide scale.
Everybody brace for opening day!

Yes, people, you're right, our brainstorming is based on some few glimpses of reality right now, even if it's kinda cool. I cannot wait for the trailer, so we could have more ideas, if and whether this movie is related to Cloverfield.
We might be though very very cautions about all the Super8 stuff, which will pop out next days all over the internet. There are many copycats, we saw it with Ethan Haas story...
Anyway, if I think about a prequel - possible were a story with Tagruato company etc. (even if JJ Abrams tries not to connect ARG and movies so tight).
P.S. And my pleasure to help with screencaps again - looking back at ol' Cloverfield times, how great months it were!

I think HitFix says it all:

Shooting a teaser trailer for a film that hasn't been made yet is uncommon enough, but the idea of doing it under a fake title and even tricking the crew into thinking they're working on a remake of a teen sex comedy is downright fiendish.
Very often big budget movies are shot under completely unrelated working titles and I'm almost certain that's what JJ Abrams has done here. I would almost guarantee that the title "Super 8" has absolutely nothing to do with whatever this preview is promoting.
That said, I hope that the preview is released online as soon as Iron Man 2 is, because although I have plans to see the movie, I really wish to do so after the crowds have waned.

I kind of discovered ARGs a bit after the cloverfield game and really only skimmed the surface of it when researching. Did the ARG ever hint to a way that a prequel could tie in? I'm just not seeing how it would translate to a prequel, otherwise. I mean, monster destroys New York City. What would be the context of the prequel? Giant Monster hides in the ocean while plotting to someday destroy New York City? Maybe it would just center around the original characters and not the giant monster at all. Sounds boring.
Now a SEQUEL...that would be cool. Or the same film filmed from a different perspective and different characters. Like 24 meets Godzilla. Yeah. Would make much more sense. Would be just like Abrams, too.
