Some people on Aintitcool talkbacks said (joking or not) that with this title, it could be a 60s-70s period prequel of Cloverfield, shot on Super8 film. It will most likely not be this, but that would be awesome!
EDIT: oh and thanks for the screencaps kosmo

Yeah, that's definitely not a Super 8 model camera. Oh well.

this -could- be interesting. i was kind of hoping it would be "star trek sequel" related, but last i heard, there isn't even a script for that and it's a bit early for a teaser trailer for a movie that's coming out in 2012. seeing as this is leaning more towards "cloverfield" related, that's interesting as well. more than likely there will be some ARG stuff on whatever this may be, considering JJ's track record, but then again, i'm not entirely holding my breath (past ARGs based on films JJ directed/produced, especially cloverfield, didn't really have a conclusion). we'll see, though.

OK, people, here is our camera guy. I am not really familiar with film hardware, but after notice by Euchre and wiki link by 113 I almost doubt, this guy and Super 8 are connected.
Anyway
(Caught at Cloverfield, 25:32min)
His camera seems to be rather digital camera than Super8... Perhaps I'm just on wrong horse... If there is such idiom in English
On the other hand I'd love to watch a movie about him, where we can see a glimpse by HUD, Rob and Co., filmed by his camera.
And perhaps... just perhaps, Jason could be alive, saved by the camera guy... and... hey, Mr. JJ? Looking for a new screenplay?

Let the speculation continue
Anytime someone drops a wiki info link, I always assume that they are linking something that directly pertains to what we're discussing. However, more often than not, it's .
I was pointing out a correlation between the title and the fact that Super 8 a format of Camera Film. Seemed like it was at least worth referencing.

Yeah, the original teaser for Cloverfield that ran in front of Transformers was labeled simply, "JJ Abrams Film". (Not talking about the "1-18-08" 'label' everyone gave it, but referring to the actual paper label that was on the loose trailers that were shipped to theaters by Paramount after the original teaser came attached to Transformers.) I was managing a theater when that came out and still have a few of those teasers.
I'm hoping that a resourceful manager or projectionist manages to get their cans opened up early. These locks are customary on just about every big Paramount summer release and they are also customarily very easy to get open.

Abrams used disinformation when he did the work for Cloverfield too. They also used several false titles, so one can't be sure the actual title will be 'Super 8'. I don't think it's any reference to previous work, but as noted in his TED Talk Abrams is referring to his original movie camera. As for the thought the person on the bridge seen filming in the original could be using a 'Super 8' - the camera he had used a video screen, and Super 8 was optical film. I've never, ever seen a Super 8 camera that used anything other than an optical viewfinder. Also, I don't think you can even buy Super 8 film anymore.
This 'smells like' how Cloverfield appeared, but there's no guarantee it's not something totally new.

Don't worry, as soon as it hits the theaters, it will be on Youtube!
Another article, this time on Gawker but nothing new there, just quoting the Hitfix original article.
Oh, and I tried just out of curiosity super8.jp but doesn't seem related. Just by curiosity also, the store at slusho.jp links to this site - http://www.displaystar.com/Default.asp
Tagruato page seems to remain the same also.

Sorry, I stand corrected.
No matter... we'll see. Reels will be unlocked Thursday night, and it'll probably be no more than minutes after that that we'll know.

I would think JJ had his hands full (he is working on "500 Rads", not to mention the Star Trek sequel), but if he's not directing this and only the producer it's a possibility. But, then again, if he is only the producer I don't have as high expectations for this than I did for Cloverfield.
But, what the hell... it's been 2+ years since that rollercoaster ride that was the Cloverfield promotion. We're due.
1: JJ produced Cloverfield. He did not direct. Matt Reeves directed
2: As it is now, in the film industry, the producers actually have a hell of a lot more creative control than directors.
I'm going to be watching this one.

With a name like Super 8 I imagine much Loch Ness Monster or Bigfoot sighting type footage. If this does pan out and a game develops as well, please let it have some point and follow through this time.
Do keep in mind something...99% of the time, reels are sent to theaters under an assumed, fictional name for security reasons. "Super 8" could very well be a code word and no indication of the contents of the reel itself.
