I'm surprised that no one has pointed you towards http://www.unfiction.com/resource/toy.html yet. I've had that bookmarked for years, and when I click the bookmark link in my browser, it opens in a sidebar and makes it very easy to find some great cryptography and decoding tools.

Keep in mind that not all ARGs or CF (Chaotic Fiction) is just 'puzzly' stuff. Wikipedia, Google, UrbanDictionary, and even Uncyclopedia and EncyclopediaDramatica can provide insights into some CF out there. Unless you are particularly drawn to the puzzle filled games, I recommend poking into one of the games more on the fringes of the genre to have a broader experience. It doesn't hurt to try to play more than one game at a time, because you never know how long a CF may really be or where it might lead.

Thanks a bunch! Also very helpful! This might be the ROT IT tool you are talking about. - http://www.unfiction.com/resource/rot-it/ I am having trouble figuring out how to use the Steg tool. Here's some links I use a lot:
Binary to text to Base64 etc. converter. Link. Cipher stuff: Cipher Tools at Rumkin. Link. UnFiction used to have a link to a ROT x tool but it's broken... Link. Kender's Vigenere Guesser. Link. WhoIs etc. Whois lookup. Link. Domain name lookup. (Find if a domain exists). Link. Sound manipulation: Audacity. Link. Of course, wikipedia, google, youtube, facebook, twitter, etc. etc. This is just the tip of the iceberg, and every game is different, as catherwood said, but I tend to use these things fairly often. Welcome. I wouldn't say you "solve" an ARG, because it's more like a story you piece together. Along the way, there may be puzzles, and they can be so varied that there really isn't a single toolkit that could cover them all. Some games even require players to write their own tools! My advice is to just start joining in and participating in a game. As puzzles appear, your fellow players can show you where to find the particular tool they've found useful. You may even teach them a trick or two! Some games tap into very specialized knowledge, and your own hobbies or background may bring something to the community that no one else thought to research before. Oh sure, you could go read a book about ciphers and learn various techniques in advance, but that's hardly fun or motivating. The joy is in the discovery and learning as it gets applied to a particular need. However, I'm sure someone will come along after me and point out the various places where we do have some common tools gathered, either in an online directory or a set of bookmarked links. Tools for beginner?
Just started...
Hey guys,
I just started to become involved in these ARGs and it seems you need to have alot of coding software and video/image/mp3 softwares, or whatever they are....what do you think is some necessary software or stuff that i can download off of the internet to help solve these ARGs?
