get a book on basic codes, cryptography the science of secret writing by laurence d smith (ISBN 048620247x) is a good one as it has a over view of the 2 basic clippers transposition/substitution as well as appendixes of letter and word frequency witch you need if you try and crack a code from the start.

learn basic computer stuff like HEX, BINARY, ASCII. A lot of stuff gets hidden in this from.

if you don't know what it is, type it into Google. Even if it just a random set of numbers Google my be able to find some thing that point you towards the answer.

save ever thing you do in its own folder. i.e. if you paint shop an image to find an massage hidden with in it save it some where you be able to find it agene easily.

this are just ideas. but the best thing you can do is keep your eyes and ears open and keep and open mind about whats going on. Smile

First, I'd suggest checking out the UnFiction Tutorial--it gives a quick once-over of most common ARG-y encryption / hiding strategies.

As for how I do things, generally I watch the technical aspects of other games to see what's going on--although Deus City is the first ARG I've played, it is most definitely not the first I've watched. It might be worth your while to read the wiki from a few finished games. Play through a puzzle trail in the "Timewasters" section, and come up with your own system for attacking these problems. Generally, if you see a URL that ends in /picture3.jpeg, see if you can find pictures 1, 2 and 4. If you're at a new website, see if the /images directory is available. Explore.

Mostly, though, ARGs depend on a lot of different eyes attacking problems from a lot of different angles--learn the basics you'll find in the Tutorial, but feel free and encouraged to follow your own hunches, always keeping in mind what kind of answer you'd expect to the given puzzle. Is it a puzzle leading to another website, or an information drop?

Figure this is a good place to ask...

Now, I realize I ask a whole heck of a lot of questions, but I really want to get good at this kind of game, which I've recently become fascinated with. Now, I've been looking over posts in various threads. I've been interested and somewhat involved in Deus City (the most), Rorschach's Journal, Eldrich Errors, and I've looked over the Frank Sturgis thing. I've noticed a pattern in a lot of the threads I've looked through though...

I have no idea what anybody is talking about.

I don't know if people just know how to dig up certain types of information more than I do, but I mean, there's so much technical information I sometimes despair at my usefulness in this genre of gaming. Maybe I'm just too late to the party most of the time and are just reading something that's long gone, but I really don't know how people find things.

Now to my question. Does anybody have any tips to help a fledgling ARG-ite? I've noticed some of what people do is manipulate URL addresses to get things that are otherwise impossible to find. Highlighting blank areas seem popular as well, but what about things that involve the website itself? So, I'll leave that out there and see what comes up. Thanks in advance to anybody who helps!
