what i find interesting about the smilies is that almost all of them are composed of three key strokes. For some reason, this puzzle doesn't scream Smiley to me. Im not sure what exactly but it doesnt seem to be smilies.

additionally, does the position of the sets in the email have a significance?

If you check all the "smilies", you find there are 26 different ones (not including ^_^), which implies to my mind some sort of alphabetic code.

Total smilies 58, most appear once only, but two of them appear 6 times.

Sadly I'm rubbish at simple substitution codes. But I WILL NOT LoOK AT THE SPOILER!!! Mad

this card is like Vexillogy. Maybe we're meant to use a Smiley Dictionary to look up the meaning of all the Smileys used in the email, and form a question from them?

If anyone knows how it was actually supposed to be solved, it would be nice to work it out that way as well.

Slight error in your transcription of the message:
Where you've used an apostophe (') in the "smilies", they should be grave accents (`).

Probably not important, but it distinguishes the "smilies" from punctuation, e.g. in the word "it's"

A substitution code? It's also a bit strange that all but one of the smilies have exactly 3 characters. The answer page says we should give a last name only, so we are looking for a name. Maybe we get a question from the smilies that give us a question.
