I THINK I SHOULD TROUT MYSELF
(NAND GATE PUZZLE)

New here...so 'hi board'..

Right. Easy enough puzzle for an engineer although FORGOT to

Now also if

PERPLEXED = perplexed in the answers; using any case for this should be wrong because ASCII 'A' does not equal 'a' in binary...so binary for 'the' = 011101000110100001100101 and the binary for 'THE' = 010101000100100001000101 - so Mind Candy requires a box of trout

You take a degree in electronics and pay attention to the digital logic/Boolean algebra/finite-state machine parts of the course. It's not that difficult once you know how (and a damn sight easier to get your head around than analogue electronics, what with complex numbers and Fourier transforms and the like....).

The silvers all seem to require some fairly specialised knowledge, so it's difficult to really know how tricky the ones I don't know about actually are, but this one's fairly straightforward - I've designed more complex circuits myself without any trouble.

Wow.. what an incredible puzzle. I finally received the card and sat down to solve it. It wasn't that hard to solve, but the real question is...

How on earth do you construct a puzzle like that? It would take me a lifetime to make a puzzle work correctly like this one... I know Brian lurks around these boards.. any insight on how you did that??

Just for completeness:

A NAND gate is essentially an AND-NOT gate conjunction. So:

Input1     Input2     OutputAND     OutputNAND
0          0          0             1

1          0          0             1
1          1          1             0


Even though there are 3 primary logic gates (AND, OR, NOT), the way you actually make these gates out of transistors is not as straight forward. Each one requires 2-3 electrical lines, where as the AND and NAND gates take only 1 line. However, you can build XOR, NXOR, OR, and NOR gates quite easily from NAND gates. So for this reason, the NAND gate is THE building block for the modern computer (and for this puzzle).

I think Elephant was a good start, furthermore though, what needs to be done, is we need to figure out what is in t he background, what it has to do with electircal circuits, and elephants. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT lol

Oh, and interestingly enough, initially I got the inputs for the 4th from bottom NAND wrong and it only mattered for the input 011, giving you elethant!
