is waiting overnight at the Detroit greyhound or amtrack station allowed? legal? is there a curfew or anything? I've waited overnight under the Greyhound station shelter in Toronto without issue. Is Detroit tighter on that?
Legal and allowed, yes. Recommended, no. During the day, the Detroit Amtrak station is a perfectly safe albeit rather basic (in terms of comfort/amenities) waystation. However, it is in a rather high-crime area on Baltimore off Woodward Ave. (the main commercial downtown thoroughfare) and I wouldn't necessarily endorse spending the night there. There are a number of reasonably clean and safe hotels in the area; again, nothing fancy, but certainly a better option than leaving things to chance, especially if you're traveling with potentially valuable items in your luggage. Detroit isn't the bombed-out ruin that the popular media likes to stereotype it as, but, like any large American city, you're always better off playing it safe rather than sorry. One other note; when you are making shuttle arrangements from the Indianapolis airport, be advised that "Indiana University" (which is in Bloomington, and which is where you want to go) is NOT the same school as "University of Indianapolis", which is a much smaller school on the south side of Indy proper and which will probably stare at you in blank confusion if you show up on its campus asking where all the ARG festivities are. :D
Hijacking this thread to mention that I'm still on the market for a roommate / roommates for ARGFest.

This story on a zombie invasion reminded me of potential antics of ARG-Fest attendees. Thought you all might enjoy it! Sorry to not be with you again this year - but maybe next?

I'd maybe check Priceline to see if you can get a decent deal on an older 3-star hotel/motel in the area, like the St. Regis or something like that. You might be able to swing something for less than $75 American, for a single-night stay.
Thanks, hopefully, because that's even pushing it...

Another thing worth considering during your brief stay in Detroit is that, as the "Motor City", it's not particularly pedestrian-friendly, and don't expect much in the way of options for public transit.
Yep, but there's the 53 bus that's pretty much direct from Greyhound to Amtrak, with a couple blocks of walking. I've done it before - for Chicago argfest years back, and another trip recently.
Rode on the bus at one time (and I'm very reclusive on the bus - just get me from A to B), which was predominantly black (very different general racial populace from back home), and I sat sideways next to someone in front a woman who was randomly cursing at them; then when that person left, she turned her attention to me and started cursing at me for..various racial reasons, personal vendettas, and other random reasons... it was quite..awkward. A few others around us had that
uhh... just pretend like she's not there
look. I was happy to move along at my destination
Nothing against Detroit, but I much prefer traveling out of Buffalo, heh. But yeah, that was the 53 to get from the border to the Amtrak, $1.50
I'll have to look into Priceline and see if there's a thrifty overnight solution nearby.
...unless anyone here lives in Detroit maybe?

this is all another reason driving over the border would be much more optimal than timing a bus schedule with the train; gah
Not to mention the fact that you're probably adding a couple of hours or so to your trip by connecting through Chicago (which requires you to go way our far west from Detroit for about 2.5 hours, then back southeast)...But hey, that's the wonder of Amtrak for ya. Never build a direct path between two points when you can make things infinitely more convoluted, instead.
yep, yep, tis a bit frustrating that Bloomington has no decent direct mass transit link not through Indi. ah well. It's going to one long adventure =)
ETA: A little more investigation has shown another option, that while a little less comfortable, is cheaper and much simpler. The greyhound goes out of Buffalo to Indianpolis, then it's the greenline/shuttle to Bloomington. And much easier scheduling, as no overnight is necessary at a station. I can head out Wednesday night to arrive in Bloomy Thurs morning, and leave Monday morning to get back to BUF Mon eve. And Buffalo's much easier to negotiate a ride home with a friend, and much easier to cross the border by car
So, woot!

Hmm...honestly, since you're getting pretty close to downtown, most of the hotels in the area are probably going to be your higher-end ones or else are going to be at the total opposite end of the spectrum, complete fleabag motels which are rather questionable. That said, I'd maybe check Priceline to see if you can get a decent deal on an older 3-star hotel/motel in the area, like the St. Regis or something like that. You might be able to swing something for less than $75 American, for a single-night stay.
Another thing worth considering during your brief stay in Detroit is that, as the "Motor City", it's not particularly pedestrian-friendly, and don't expect much in the way of options for public transit. Unlike, say, a city like New York Chicago, Detroit doesn't have a subway or an el; people DRIVE pretty much everywhere. So if you're looking at hotels farther than just a mile or so away from the station, prepare to think about taxis and what have you.

But hey, that's the wonder of Amtrak for ya. Never build a direct path between two points when you can make things infinitely more convoluted, instead.

understood... that was my main concern. Renting a room though - don't think I'd have money to spend on that unless there's a really cheap motel nearby or something. I'm not worried about quality of sleep arrangements, obviously
Do you know of a cheap motel near the Amtrak? Schedule has me on the 6:48am train out...
And on returning, I'd be getting back to the station at 12:30am; almost seems a waste to have a room for the night then. (this is all another reason driving over the border would be much more optimal than timing a bus schedule with the train; gah!) and thanks for the help =)

natas, I've PM'd you, just waiting for a reply
Travel plans...
Ok, so I think I've got a schedule nailed down, though nothing is purchased yet... anyone also traveling from Toronto/GTA/Ontario at all?
I'm sacrificing travel time for cost this time, for the joy of traveling... as it stands:
1. taking the Greyhound on Tuesday to Detroit (and transit to Amtrak to wait overnight)
2. leave on Amtrak Wednesday morning, transfer in Chicago, to arrive in Indianapolis Wednesday evening
3. Shuttle to Indianapolis Uni/Biddle Wednesday eve.
hotel plans are in the works...
The plan is to stay over the last Sunday night to head out home Monday morning.
Over all it's cheaper than flying (~$400 round trip, from home to hotel), less hassle with security and whatnot, but man it's a longer trip... that's fine, lots of geocaches to pass the time
Now if anyone else is coming from Ontario, I'd definitely be up for chatting about some shared travel plans (like driving cross-border to Detroit and splitting gas, instead of taking the bus
) or something.
Anyway, I think I'll be finalizing and purchasing all the travel plans by the early bird registration deadline.
Quick question: is waiting overnight at the Detroit greyhound or amtrack station allowed? legal? is there a curfew or anything? I've waited overnight under the Greyhound station shelter in Toronto without issue. Is Detroit tighter on that?

I'm FINALLY gonna be able to attend an ARGFest! It's not far from me and I have absolutely nothing holding me back this year.
With that said, I am actively looking for someone to room with. I don't have a reservation and am hoping to make plans with someone ASAP. PM me or reply here if you're interested.

Going to bump this again - If you're planning to attend, there are a couple of things you can do to help meet and coordinate with people beforehand, before registration opens:
Go list yourself on the Attendees list at the wiki -
http://wiki.argfestocon.com/index.php?title=2011_Attendees
And/or RSVP to the Facebook event -
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=194648930556623
Only months away now!

Nighthawk
*cry!*
Since ARGFest 2011 starts on my birthday this year... I don't know how likely it is that I'll attend. Family had other plans that week.
Maybe I could convince them that Bloomington is much more exciting than, say, Disney World...

As an FYI to people answering that question here, don't forget to also add yourself to the
2011 attendees list
at the ARGFest-o-wiki

*bump* (well, not for the thread listing, but for new activity =)
The date's arriving soon. Who's planning to attend? Who has or is looking for a room share? Who hasn't heard of this until now? =P

ARGFest-o-Con 2011: Bloomington
The location has been decided and now the fun begins!
(from
http://2011.argfestocon.com
)
After weeks of deliberation, and based on feedback from volunteers and discussions within the Directing Committee, we would like to announce that Bloomington, Indiana will be the host site for ARGFest-o-Con 2011! Bloomington was one of three excellent location proposals to come in earlier this year, and although the decision was tough, we think we have an excellent host city to enjoy in July 2011. We’d like to thank the people responsible for all of the submissions for their top-notch work in pitching their city for ARGFest-o-Con 2011.
In the coming weeks, we will be making important announcements, such as dates for the conferences and events, hotel options, sponsorship opportunities and more. We will also be holding an online chat in the next few weeks for everyone to come and share their ideas for ARGFest-o-Con 2011 in Bloomington, so stay tuned for that announcement as well. If you haven’t already joined our volunteer group, now would be an excellent time to get in on the ground floor of the planning process.
We hope you all have a safe and happy new year, and look forward to the next few months leading up to ARGFest-o-Con 2011: Bloomington. If you want to start planning ahead, the Bloomington/Monroe County Convention & Visitors Bureau has an excellent web site set up at visitbloomington.com.
