Anyone managed to get this solved yet? I've tried various possibilities - rethinking the wording on the card: what are these places? Maybe its not as straight forward as the name of the places??? Help Please!!
Instead of reinventing the wheel, trying reading the thread. This site is very good about collecting and sharing information, but we do expect you to read instead of tryin to get somebody else to reproduce what has already been done. See page 1 of this thread.

What i have found
Ya
Ok these are all coordinates on Mars...
1 is Olympus Mons, a mountain?
2 Kin, this is where they are looking for a British probe called Beagle 2 ?
3 Portsmouth, where the first British settlers settled in USA?
4 Pavonis Mons, its a 12km high Volcano
5 Sergei Korolev, chief designer of some mission to get a man on mars
6 Giovanni Virginio Schiaparelli, He mapped mars apparently
If anyone has any finds to help out that would be nice

I just thought I'd try a different angle seeing as I'd not been correct with the real place names - mainly because I'd been putting "crater" on the end of 4 and 5
I agree with ezmo, inputting answers needs to be much more flexible!!

Hello!
Can confirm that solitair has the correct answer.
I spent all afternoon at work pin-pointing the right places and was gutted when I got home and it said Incorrect!
I was just adding an extra two words after the answers for 2 and 3!
I wish inputting the answers was slightly more flexible!
Bye Bye!

fair enough must of just been the sojurner bit!

Ah, it actually accepts 1 as well as I. So there.

Dam i was so close then on mine, been putting in sojurner for the 2nd rather than the correct answer, again never thought of "I" instead of "1", to be fair though i think thats being a bit picky on mindcandy's part since both the numeral and number mean the same thing!

I have no idea how many guesses I wasted using a "1" because the thought never occurred to me to use an "I" instead, but it was a lot. I have to wait until this afternoon before my card is unlocked before I can confirm the answer for myself.

Oooh, I was so close with my last guess (see previous page), that was what I was going to try next. Although with a 1 rather than a I.
Thanks for revealing the answer, and I agree that you didn't have to.

Schiaparelli

Ditto!
Thanks Kvasir!

I was actually thinking about this before I saw the solve and it fits the wording of the questions so well I'm kicking myself for not seeing it any of the umpteen times I've stared at the card...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1 and 4 very much imply a full place name - Olympus Mons and Pavonis Mons, while 5 and 6 imply a surname - Korolev and Schiaparelli.
Aaarrrggghhh.

Thanks Seej. And don't anyone kill Chalco, I'm the one whose been holding him back. He's been begging me to tell all morning, but I've been stuck in meetings and unable to get online let alone respond to his texts about villagers and pitchforks...
The reason I withheld this isn't because I wanted to be mean, I thought you would prefer to get the solve yourselves. I've been trying very hard not to come on here until I know the answers. I'm interested in the puzzles not the points. Silver cards and especially that Riemann one are another matter and I need all the help I can get!!
Seej wrote:
Don't have the card with me at work but I'd be willing to bet, ooooh, a tenner or so, that the answers (based on what we now know) are.
I hope you made that bet Seej, you were spot on on all three counts. I thought that the clue I gave earlier would be pretty helpful.
Seeing as everyone has effectively solved this (except for Looosey!), and are just waiting until they get the correct set of answers from BriEnigma's list, I've set out a full solve below.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1. Olympus Mons
2. Pathfinder
3. Viking I
4. Pavonis Mons
5. Korolev
6. Schiaparelli
Just like to point out, I'm doing this from work and from memory, so I may be wrong about 3. It might be just "Viking" but I think I'm right.
To get the solve I just googled the coords in the form "19.6N 256E", and one of the first hits was a list of mars nomenclature. I got confirmation when Korolev turned up, and a google of that name came up with "chief designer" written all over it.
PS: Well done solitair, you get it first try with your proposals

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The two answers that are spot on are Olympus Mons and Pavonis Mons.
The two answers that are partially correct are the crater names and we simply need to refer to them as Schiaparelli and Korolev, since that's what both the maps I've seen call them.
The other two are the ones that have always seemed somehow 'off' to me but we know the basics so it's just a case of working through BriEnigma's list and posting here so that our efforts are coordinated.
I have come to pretty much the same conclusion as Seej and once I'm unlocked (shortlyish) I'll be trying the following:-
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Olympus Mons
Pathfinder
Viking I
Pavonis Mons
Korolev
Schiaparelli
Then:-
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Olympus Mons
Mars Pathfinder
Viking I
Pavonis Mons
Korolev
Schiaparelli
Finally:-
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Olympus Mons
Ares Vallis
Chryse planitia
Pavonis Mons
Korolev
Schiaparelli
And hope that I don't just get another 3 fails to add to my ever growing collection.
(edit to change sojourner to mars pathfinder as that combo has been tried.)

Whoah guys and gals; Chalco and Kvasir can tell us as much or as little as they like. That's their perogative. Yes, we do tend to share solves around here and the forum is certainly a valuable resource for people who can't get solves on their own, but if someone chooses not to share that doesn't mean we should break out the torches and pitchforks
Granted this post may act as flamebait for some of you but I'm simply trying to stop us turning nasty - this is a game after all.
Besides, there's two things which you should consider:
1. This way someone else gets some credit for the solve as well and we all have something to do while we're waiting for more cards to solve.
2. If we're
really
incapable of solving this (though I can't see why collectively it should take us long now) then Chalco and Kvasir are far more likely to tell us the answer if we're playing nice.
Don't have the card with me at work but I'd be willing to bet, ooooh, a tenner or so, that the answers (based on what we now know) are:

Now let's not get
"Does not play well with others"
on the unfiction school report, ok?
